At the Annual Bass Islands Audubon Christmas Bird Count, 53 species were recorded.They included mergansers, a purple sandpiper, great blue herons, kildeer, belted kingfisher, tundra swans, yellow-rumped warblers, golden-crowned kinglets, bald eagles, and black-capped chicadees.
