Legend has it that this chain, the links of which weigh seven pounds, holds the mountainside in place, protecting the town of Pineville below. The current chain, installed in 1933, was the second chain to fulfill this function. The Pineville Chain Rock Club, local Boy Scouts, and the Civilian Conservation Corps worked together to haul the chain up the mountain.

Hi, Mary Jo!! These pics are just awesome. I hope you are (in your FREE TIME, hah) loading them all into sets on a Flickr account as well so that all your fans can watch the slideshows. I've been taking my boy-crew on hikes like this, too, and we are getting lots out of it together. We don't need no stinkin' amusement parks (don't tell my boys I said that); we have the original parks!
