Yo-Yo Ma in 2002

I'm finishing up an essay this morning in which I refer to being captivated by Yo-Yo Ma when he and Sting performed together at the opening ceremony at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. Then I remembered the revolution YouTube has created and went looking. Sure enough, someone posted a video of the performance, and now you can hear/watch it here.

For no reason I can see, the photographer fixated on Sting, while the interesting performer here is actually Yo-yo Ma. Watch him. You seldom see a musician -- or any other kind of entertainer, performer, or worker in general -- so clearly enthralled with the task, the location, the moment, the music. Pure joy: that's what Yo-Yo brings to and with the cello.
