My newest essay is out in Today's Woman, and once again Silvia has outdone herself. I'm really happy with the piece, too. To write about intimacy, and especially family intimacy, without being sentimental is always a challenge. Half the solution is to find a point of entry that is a bit silly -- for instance, my self-wrestling over whether or not a someone will get a beautiful piece of lace for her birthday -- or whether it's going to stay on my mantel, where it's happy.
