These photos show an area that's being restored following mountaintop removal mining. This area of Kentucky was mined in the 1970s. Afterwards, the mining company planted pine trees, which have grown as have many many volunteer hardwoods. There's still a lot of empty space surrounding the restored area, and not so many birds or insects as you might expect.
