Here's a photo taken on August 29, the first time I saw this Great Blue Heron on a nearby pond. He was back again this morning when I walked the dog at 6:05 but standing in the water this time with a fish dangling from his beak. (In the photo he's standing on the device through which a fountain spouts; the fountain is now working again.) As I watched, he took a step away, then another step onto a hillock in the pond. The fish (or perhaps it was a frog) dropped from his mouth. He swooshed his wings but didn't fly. Instead, he took two more long steps away and craned his neck to look into the water, searching again for breakfast. It was still dark, but there was enough light that I could see his reflection in the pond.
